If you own dogs you know they shed. If you own big hairy dogs you know they shed A LOT!
I grew up hearing my mother and my friends mother’s euphemisms about dust bunnies and kittens under the bed… Oh the horror! Yeah, well they didn’t live with Buddy.
I don’t get dust bunnies, nor dust kittens, I get dust buffaloes!
They congregate in the corners, hide under the sofa, the chest of drawers, and lurk under the bed, but the worst is when they creep into the kitchen and …
Well, you know what I mean. Now there are jokes about your food not tasting right without the cat or dog hair in it, but really? I don’t find them humorous. So, I have banished the dogs from the kitchen, at least during mealtimes, and the looks I get are pathetic.
Buddy, “Look mom, I’m being such a good dog! Can I come in now?”
Me, “No, sorry boy, I’m making dinner.”
Later, after dinner…
I ask you, “Is he not pathetic looking?” It is an hour and a half later and he hasn’t moved, “Good boy!” I tell him.
And the very next morning…
“Aw, Mom! We’re being really good, and the morning sun feels so nice…”
And what can I say? Sighing softly to myself, not a thing.
Instead, I head for the vacuum cleaner.

What sweet dogs! When I got married this summer, my Australian Shepherd (nicknamed Polar Bear because of his white fluffy hair!) and I moved in with my husband and his Border Collie to their farm. My husband grew up with dogs outside and I grew up with them in the house. Needless to say we’ve both compromised. I scrimped and saved and bought a Dyson and the dogs now come in at night and sleep inside the house. If it wasn’t for the Dyson and vacuuming constantly, no one, including the dogs, would be talking to each other!

Yes, we have rules. Barney the Chihuahua sleeps in bed with us. Between us. The rule is that we will guard his chewie/pig ear/dental bone, which he carefully places between our heads berfore he burrows under the covers for the night. Gorgeous dogs, by the way….
Hi Chris, that’s where Tucker sleeps too! (the little Rat Terrier) But he is not allowed any toys in bed. How cute that your little Barney lets you (expects you to?) guard his chewy!

Patti, isn’t that the truth! When we moved I was mortified to see what was under our bed, when our friends took it down and loaded it onto the moving van!!!
I keep teasing my daughter that she’s trying to build another dog with all the hair around her house (she raises mastiffs). In our household, we’re trying to reconstruct a miniature pinscher with all the hair!

Nancy, it is a never ending battle, isn’t it? I even comb him every day. I have to, because he rolls about in the lawn and leaves, and if I don’t then I have oak leaves and grass to contend with in the house as well! Hm, you’ve given me an idea… remember the lady who made art out of dryer lint?

Well, no doggies in my life, but I do have Miss Dixie. She’s no doubt under the bed at this point, completely out of sorts over my disappearance. Better I not think about that.
I try and keep her shedding under control by brushing her both morning and night. She really loves it, and will come and sit by her brush, asking for me to get with it. The eight years or so I’ve had her, I’ve only had two hair balls coughed up, so we seem to be on top of that situation. She does shed, of course, but it’s not too bad and I have a pretty high tolerance for dust and cat hair, so vacuuming a couple of times a week does fine.
As for rules and limits – she’s a strange one, because she doesn’t do any of the things cats usually do. She doesn’t jump on furniture or counters, she won’t eat anything except her dry food, and she doesn’t scratch anything except her scratching post. If I tell her “no”, she’ll usually stop whatever she’s up to, and she is fastidious about her litter box.
I have no idea how she got shaped into such a wonderful kitty, but there she is. Now I’m feeling even more guilty about leaving her. Despite all those good things I said about my love of travel over at my place, it’s really, really hard for me to leave her. Bad me. 😉
Obviously, she is such a great kitty because she has such an attentive owner. How else? 😉

Oh, honey. You don’t know. The last time I came home from an extended trip, I slept on the couch the first night because she was NOT going to allow me on the bed. Mad kitty is one thing. Mad kitty with claws is another. 😉

You have beautiful dogs! I have a long haired Shepherd and I get ‘tumbleweeds’ of hair rolling down my hallway. The only way I can stop this madness is to shave him every summer 🙂

It’s a lot of fun being a dog owner but there are many benefits to being an ex dog owner. Your life being your own for one. Lovely looking dogs.
Thanks, Tom! Actually, we have been known to take the dogs with us on trips, but since we moved here it’s the chickens and geese that keep us tied to home. Somehow, trying to pack them up for a trip is just not appealing at all! 😉

How long does it take for their fur to grow back in?
About 3 months before shedding became a problem again. In six months their coat would all be back. There’s no reason to chicken out, it grows back, and in the interim your pets are not dropping clumps of hair all over your house. Works for me! I can look at your dog and see that a haircut would look real nice. I’m a professional groomer, trust me!
